Metatarsal Stress Fractures

The foot is made up of tiny bones, called metatarsals. A metatarsal stress fracture is an acute fracture of one of these little bones. This usually occurs from overuse or poor foot mechanics. When bodies break down, they generally break down at the weakest point. In sports, stress fractures are caused by repetitive force over a long period of time. Metatarsal fractures can happen from wearing the wrong shoes, training on hard pavement and poor nutrition. These factors puts one at higher risk for developing stress fractures. Symptoms of metatarsal stress fractures are dull, underlying pain, that can be intermittent. One should not ignore pain of any sort. In fact, catching and treating pain early can help metatarsal stress fractures heal quicker than if ignored. If you feel you have sustained a stress fracture or have any other pain in your feet, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can diagnose the problem and get you back to full functioning as soon as possible.

Dealing with Stress Fractures of the Foot and Ankle

Stress fractures occur in the foot and ankle when muscles in these areas weaken from too much or too little use.  The feet and ankles then lose support when walking or running from the impact of the ground. Since there is no protection, the bones receive the full impact of each step. Stress on the feet can cause cracks to form in the bones, thus creating stress fractures.

What Are Stress Fractures?

Stress fractures occur frequently in individuals whose daily activities cause great impact on the feet and ankles. Stress factors are most common among:

  • Runners
  • People affected with Osteoporosis
  • Tennis or basketball players
  • Gymnasts
  • High impact workouts

Symptoms

Pain from the fractures occur in the area of the fractures and can be constant or intermittent. It will often cause sharp or dull pain with swelling and tenderness. Engaging in any kind of activity which involves high impact will aggravate pain.

What Can Contribute to Ankle Pain?

Anyone who has experienced ankle pain is often aware of the difficulty this may cause while attempting to complete daily activities. The function of the ankle is to provide balance and stability to the body, and there are several bones, ligaments, and tendons that are found within it. Research has indicated it is the bone in the body that is injured most frequently, and it can happen from overuse, or a running injury. It can also occur while stepping off of a curb or uneven surface, which can stretch the ankle beyond its normal range of motion. It is suggested that people who enjoy participating in sporting activities perform strengthening ankle stretches and exercises, and this may help to provide proper conditioning. There may be existing medical conditions that can affect the ankle. These include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or post-traumatic arthritis. It may be difficult to put any weight on the ankle, and walking may be difficult or impossible to do. Ankle discomfort is not a normal ailment to have, and if you are experiencing this type of pain, it is strongly advised that you consult with a podiatrist who can determine what the source is, and treat it accordingly.

Ankle pain can be caused by a number of problems and may be potentially serious. If you have ankle pain, consult with Lance Greiff, DPM from Great Neck Podiatry. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Prevention of Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is a condition condition involving inflammation in the ligament that extends from the toes to the heels. It is one of the most common causes of heel pain. This affliction can cause sharp pain, especially when arising in the morning, and can interfere with walking or exercise. Plantar fasciitis is caused by activities that place stress on the heel, such as running or jumping, and standing on hard surfaces for a prolonged period of time. Additionally, obesity and aging may contribute significantly to developing plantar fasciitis. Preventive measures that can be taken may include varying exercise routines to work different muscles and including low impact exercise options to reduce stress on the heel. It may be beneficial to wear a night splint on the affected foot to keep the foot and ankle in the optimal position. If you believe that you have plantar fasciitis, it is strongly suggested that you visit a podiatrist who can properly diagnose this condition and obtain treatment that may be more effective for you.

Plantar fasciitis can be very painful and inconvenient. If you are experiencing heel pain or symptoms of plantar fasciitis, contact Lance Greiff, DPM  from Great Neck Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of the thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot, known as the plantar fascia, and causes mild to severe heel pain.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

  • Excessive running
  • Non-supportive shoes
  • Overpronation
  • Repeated stretching and tearing of the plantar fascia

How Can It Be Treated?

  • Conservative measures – anti-inflammatories, ice packs, stretching exercises, physical therapy, orthotic devices
  • Shockwave therapy – sound waves are sent to the affected area to facilitate healing and are usually used for chronic cases of plantar fasciitis
  • Surgery – usually only used as a last resort when all else fails. The plantar fascia can be surgically detached from the heel

While very treatable, plantar fasciitis is definitely not something that should be ignored. Especially in severe cases, speaking to your doctor right away is highly recommended to avoid complications and severe heel pain. Your podiatrist can work with you to provide the appropriate treatment options tailored to your condition.

Shoes for Specific Sporting Activities

It is beneficial to begin looking after your child’s feet when they are babies. There are simple measures that can help protect their feet as the growing process occurs. When toddlers begin to walk, it is beneficial to walk barefoot while inside as this can help to strengthen their overall foot as the toes grip the floor. When walking outside, the correct shoes need to be worn in the right size. When children get an adequate amount of exercise it helps keep the joints and muscles strong, in addition to improving circulation. Additionally, having your child eat healthy foods that have enough levels of vitamin D can help to maintain strong bones and support healthy connective tissue. There are specific shoes to wear for certain types of sporting activities. Shoes that have good support and cushioning can help the feet feel comfortable while engaging in strenuous sports. Having good arch support may help to prevent potential foot conditions. If you have concerns about your children’s feet and would like more information about the type of shoes they should wear, please consult with a podiatrist who can answer any questions you may have.

Making sure that your children maintain good foot health is very important as they grow. If you have any questions, contact Lance Greiff, DPM of Great Neck Podiatry. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

Having healthy feet during childhood can help prevent medical problems later in life, namely in the back and legs. As children grow, their feet require different types of care. Here are some things to consider...

Although babies do not walk yet, it is still very important to take care of their feet.

Avoid putting tight shoes or socks on his or her feet.

Allow the baby to stretch and kick his or her feet to feel comfortable.

As a toddler, kids are now on the move and begin to develop differently. At this age, toddlers are getting a feel for walking, so don’t be alarmed if your toddler is unsteady or ‘walks funny’.

As your child gets older, it is important to teach them how to take care of their feet.

Show them proper hygiene to prevent infections such as fungus.

Be watchful for any pain or injury.

Have all injuries checked by a doctor as soon as possible.

Comfortable, protective shoes should always be worn, especially at play.
